Benedicite.
Most of Europe owns its colonization to the Benedictine monks. When it was installed, the monastery attracted, not only for its religiosity, but also, for its self-suficiency. Getting them settled around it, the people found there the necessary for their survival. As a result of it villages and european cities got started.
In Brazil, it seems to me, that only Sorocaba’s Saint Benedictine Monastery had this function. When Baltazar Fernandes, the city’s founder, donated, in 1660, his church, dedicated to Our Lady of the Bridge to the Benedictine monks, he certainly expected the results of this donation. The church enlarged, seven years later, was already unified to the monastic complex. In 1661, it was already the “Village of Our Lady of the Bridge Sorocaba”, and in 1842, it was already the “City of Sorocaba”. So, the city’s history is tied with the Saint Benedictine Monastery’s one. Today, the Monastery is a city’s historical patrimony and we are restoring it so it can be revitalized, that is it can hold a Benedictine Community in its interior again.
I don’t know how or if you can help us. But, we do trust in God and we are sure that Our Lady is mediating this Monastery’s restoration.
